Type Analysis

Normal

Normal Pokémon

The most versatile type of Pokémon. Normal-types are usually pure Normal; in fact I believe the only two types that have been combined with it are Psychic (only in Girafarig) and Flying. Nevertheless, they can usually learn loads of elemental attacks through TM (although not many have the Special attack to use them properly) and can have various purposes depending on the species.

Normal types commonly have either high Speed or high HP, but there are exceptions. Some of the weaker Normal types can usually be found very early in the games; in the first generation it's Rattata, in the second Sentret, and in the third Zigzagoon.

Normal is weak only to Fighting, resistant to nothing, but immune to Ghost.

Normal attacks

Normal attacks can be learned by just about every Pokémon in existence. Every time an attack doesn't have a clear type it should definitely be, they slap Normal on it. There isn't much all Normal attacks have in common, basically.

Normal attacks are physical, meaning they run off Attack, super effective on nothing but not very effective on Rock and Steel, plus ineffective on Ghost.

Fire

Fire Pokémon

Fire Pokémon generally have high Special attack; I don't think there is a single Fire type out there that doesn't have Special attack at least among its highest stats. Otherwise, Fire-types are very different from each other.

Fire Pokémon are weak to Water, Rock and Ground and resistant to Fire, Grass, Ice, Bug and Steel.

Fire attacks

Fire attacks are usually damaging. There is Sunny day and Will-o-wisp, but otherwise everything deals damage. Most of these damaging Fire attacks have a chance of inflicting a burn upon the opponent.

Fire attacks run off Special attack, are super effective on Grass, Ice, Bug and Steel and not very effective on Fire, Water, Rock and Dragon.

Water

Water Pokémon

One would perhaps expect Normal to have the largest number of Pokémon, but actually Water's 78 Pokémon stole first place. The fact that they're so many also makes them very different. I personally think there are way too many Water types, but meh...

Water Pokémon are weak only to Grass and Electric and resistant to Fire, Water, Ice and Steel.

Water attacks

There are only three Water attacks that don't deal any damage; Withdraw, Rain dance and Water sport. The damaging ones are divided into two parts, one of which contains Bubblebeam, Clamp, Bubble, Octazooka, Whirlpool, Muddy water and Water pulse, and the other Water gun, Hydro pump, Surf, Waterfall, Crabhammer, Dive, Hydro cannon and Water spout. The difference between the groups is that the former inflicts effects of some sort on the opponent, while the latter doesn't. Because unlike Fire, Electric and Ice, Water doesn't have a special effect of its own, the effects are various.

Water attacks are special, super effective on Fire, Ground and Rock and not very effective on Water, Grass and Dragon.

Electric

Electric Pokémon

The Electric-type is unfortunately somewhat neglected, with only twenty-one of them in total and only ten non-Legendary evolution lines, which is a pity since I like the Electric-type very much. Nevertheless, I can't say it's not without reason; the fact that Electric has only one weakness and is super effective on two of the most common types gives it a slight advantage. Electric Pokémon are almost always fast with high Special attack and low defenses.

Electric Pokémon are weak to Ground and resistant to Electric, Flying and Steel.

Electric attacks

Electric has its own status effect, namely paralysis. While other attacks can inflict it, all the damaging Electric attacks, as far as I know, have a chance of inflicting it. There are only two non-damage dealing Electric attacks, one being Thunder wave, the accurate paralysis-inflicting attack that is a must-have, and the other being Charge, which doubles the damage done by your Electric attacks on the next turn - not too interesting since you could as well just attack twice.

Electric attacks are special, and they're super effective on Water and Flying. Electric is not very effective on Electric, Grass and Dragon and Ground is completely immune to it.

Grass

Grass Pokémon

Grass Pokémon almost always have sub-par Speed; in fact, I think the Treecko line and the Hoppip line are the only exceptions. Grass-types are some of the most strategy-based Pokémon in the game, though, since they specialize in those nasty annoyer sets. They often have balanced stats, but the Special stats stand out. Unfortunately, they're not used that much due to their many weaknesses.

Grass is weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying and Bug, and resistant to Water, Electric, Grass and Ground.

Grass attacks

Grass is one of the most interesting types move-wise. The direct damage inflicters are rather pathetic; Grass has no Flamethrower/Ice Beam/Thunderbolt equivalent, Solarbeam the 120 base damage attack is no use without Sunny Day to remove the charging turn (which just invites Fire-types to come and cream you), Leaf Blade is only learned by Sceptile and Giga Drain has just too few PP, but Grass-types are the masters of healing themselves. First, there are Absorb, Mega Drain and Giga Drain, which will restore your HP by half the damage they deal; then there is Leech Seed, which drains HP from the opponent every turn; Synthesis heals depending on the weather or, in G/S/C, the time of day; Ingrain will heal you every turn although it makes you unable to switch; and finally, Aromatherapy is a Grass version of Heal Bell and will heal all status affections from your team. Grass also has a wide arsenal of status-inflicting attacks.

Bird Pokémon

Bird Pokémon aren't a special type, but in a way they deserve to be. There technically is a Bird type, which Missingno. is, but the actual bird Pokémon are Normal/Flying types. The only final-form Normal/Flying type that is not a bird Pokémon is Togetic. Bird Pokémon share common features: Speed and Attack are always among their three highest stats; they can learn Fly; almost all their attacks, both natural and machine, are Normal or Flying; they are all in the Flying egg group; and are, obviously, all based on birds.
