Ahaha, I'm a fan of Pikasprey's softlock picking videos!
It doesn't have to do with "too much" junk data, unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean - the junk data the Mew trick relies on is always the same amount of data stored in the same locations. The problem here is that when Pikasprey battles a second trainer on the route that's already set to the "Start trainer battle" meta-map script, the game attempts to increment the current meta-map script ID again, which puts the script ID out of sync with what it's expected to be (both because it increments when you initiate the battle and because this sets the last text box ID you looked at to a trainer's pre-battle dialogue, which then triggers a battle with that trainer again after you black out), and the route ends up on an invalid script ID that does not point to a real meta-map script but instead to some other location in memory. When whatever data is in the location that points to gets executed as if it were a meta-map script, it can have any number of glitchy effects; on this particular route, it seems, it'll overwrite the memory locations holding the third item in your inventory and the amount of the second item in your inventory to the same set values (the item ID of the Dragon Rage TM and 7, respectively).
There's a YouTuber who specializes in turning Gen 1-3 save files into extremely elaborate horror-movie-level softlocks, and within the past day, they managed to combine Oversights #1-3 from this writeup, along with a lesser-known effect from 1 and 2 on the sea route that leads from Fuschia to Cinnabar. That allows the player to overwrite any items, including key items, with TM23 Dragon Rage, as long as the item to be overwritten is the third item in the bag.
It seems to be the result of the game being forced to create so much junk data that there isn't enough room to simply recycle it into one-time encounter data. When that happens, the game's next option is to dump that overflow over your item bag's memory, which results in item #2 getting multiplied by 7, and item #3 getting replaced with a bit of code that's then interpreted as TM23: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8f9DoruByBE
At first, when I watched it, I assumed that the softlock would rely on Oversight #4 in your analysis to remove the required items for challenging the Cinnabar and Saffron Gyms from the map, but nope, this softlock relies on actually pocketing the items and creating so much overflow data that the game's backup option is to fill the wild-encounter data (which is then removed when the encounter is sprung on the player), and into and over your item bag data and the sea route's data (which is far more permanent).
It's honestly amazing how these glitches are still being found 30 years after the games' initial releases, and I keep coming back to this writeup as a result, because you did an amazing job of showing both the coding side of it, the programmers' oversights and thinking, how this trick was discovered, and how it was initially dismissed, and it gives a very complete picture of the trick. Please keep up the awesome work! :)
YESHH one of my fav pokemonss Mismagius
Texts that are slightly odd to read when you're a Giratina Cultist who considers cutting Giratina's name into your thigh. (For the record, that's more just general mental illness than something related to the pokey mans - Giratina is simply a muse for my own menhera, but those types of Christians operate more on fear than logic.)
I am glad this website is still active. I used to spend hours reading this website when I was younger. I was particularly fond of the marquee of doom! I took inspiration and made my own webpage back in 2008 (it was called pokemon-nonsense) but that page is long gone. I am now 31. Just wanted to leave a comment!
Thanks, glad it's helpful!
The site has been here since 2002; this particular guide is from 2010. I'm guessing you were looking at the last modified date on the page? I did a general backend overhaul last year that unfortunately resulted in everything being shown as last modified on that date, so a recent modified date does not necessarily mean the actual content is recent.
Replaying heart gold for the first time since I was like 8 (genuinely have no clue how I managed to beat it back then lmaooo). I'm only on the fourth gym rn but this is still pretty helpful!
Anyway I mainly just wanted to say that this website is so cool!! The guides are rlly detailed and the ability to change the background colours is awesome! :-D
Thank u for making this, I was half expecting this site to be from like the early 2010s so I'm shocked to see it was made so recently :-0
Hi ur sites rly cute and nice and i like the catch rate calculator lol
I’ve been trying to catch a 1 hp azelf for 2 hours how have I not caught it yet I hate this game (/j)
Most everyone does. I'd say more people speak English here than Icelandic, actually, since at any given time there are a lot of recent immigrants who haven't had a reason or chance to learn Icelandic.
I'm probably not the best person to ask about hotels in Reykjavík either! I just live here; I have never had to book a hotel in my own city.
For things to do in the city, I tend to take friends up in the clock tower of Hallgrímskirkja, see if they want to try to go whale- or puffin-watching, and might also suggest things like the whale museum (which has a bunch of full-scale models of whales that give you a much better sense of the size of these creatures). Also, Brauð & co. makes excellent cinnamon rolls.
Do many people in Iceland speak English?
What's the best hotels that are good while being good value for money and not too expensive in Reykjavik? And what are the best things to do on holiday in the city?
but you know who WILL probably try to cover it in the next couple months………………..
I enjoyed the Medal Rally during my own playthrough; never played all that much Pokéstar Studios. I'm afraid those aren't a high priority for me as content goes - I don't really think I'd have anything to say or contribute about these features that wouldn't just be looking up information that's already been dug up by others and repeating it, which generally isn't a type of content I go for.
Hi, what did you think of the Medals and Pokestar Studios in Black and White 2?
Personally, I liked Pokestar Studios much better than the Nimbasa Musical.
I'd love to see a guide for the Medals, Hidden Grottos, and/or Pokestar Studios if you'd like, but I know real life takes priority and you have a baby/toddler Caterpie now.
I GOT PYROAR AND IT’S ONE OF MY FAV POKÉMONS HEH
Very fun read! I didn't know about half of them
I'm the last person to oppose to dirty jokes but I feel quite innocently about the intention behind the "hook" line? Personally I feel it was intended just as a cute metaphor for upid's arrow!
Speaking about such things… no mention of the Young Couple's Onix and Cloyster…?!
I loved the original as a kid. If I remember correctly, I think it was about looking for Misdreavus on Crystal? I like this version a lot too, and it's more detailed, but I think I prefer the old version (probably for nostalgia; I read that version a ton when I was maybe eleven). I really like the concept, especially since it's very slice-of-life and I appreciate that. I think the new version was from 2006-ish, and I remember when it came out. I'm so glad it's still here.
Hell yeah, Zoroark is awesome
