02/12/07 English Names

The New York Toy Fair has apparently revealed some more English Pokémon names, according to Serebii.net.

We'll hopefully get more stuff very soon when they get clearer pictures. And now I'd better go update my list generator and sprite generator.

EDIT: More already, it seems; Serebii now says that Mimiroru's name is Buneary, Nyarumaa's is Glameow and Masukippa's is Carnivine. It seems to imply these are all definite.

EDIT (2): Pochama is confirmed.

EDIT (3): More from Serebii, with it noted that they may be off by a couple of letters although I'm still updating the Sprite Generator and List Generator with them:

EDIT (4): Tatetopusu is Shieldon.

Ahhh..more English names...*u* Turtwig sounds awkward. (I'm still choosing it, though), Chimchar = XD, Pochama = <3, ...Glameow. Awesome. I'm loving these names already! XD *squeal*

Quick opinions:

Turtwig - what irony it was that I thought of that name. O_o
Chimchar - Discussed already by some people I know. "Char" shouldn't have been there. Charmander!
Pochama - Nothing else seems to work! At least it's still cute, and they probably won't need another American voice actor. =P
Starly - Sounds overly cute-- no wait, it sounds like a guessed name for Jirachi, way back then.
Kricketot - Gotta love clicky syllables.
Spinx - Nooo... too obvious....
Shieldon - Shieldon? Rhydon? Something's wrong here!
Pachirisu - Eh.
Floatzel - Fan guesses are 75% accurate!
Snelios/Shelios - Snelios sounds more fitting. They have no shells yet. >_>
Buneary - Bunny + ears. Bunny ears! Whee!
Glameow - What's it's evolution's name? Blingpurr? O_o
Happini - Hmm, it can work. Happini is happenin'. XD
Croalurk - Did Serebii skip a letter?
Carnivine - Sounds okay.

I like them all, except Floatzel. "Float" doesn't sound like a big step up from "buoy." Also Glameow sounds like someone was up really late naming these things and just got really tired of it.

Buneary... It's not that creative, but it sounds nice.

Pochama is the first English starter name that's the same as its Japanese one but doesn't have a meaning in English. It's still a cute name. ^^
Gardevoir~
I like most of them. Glameow...er...well, it's a bit strange in context but I like saying it.

Buneary...okay, the name is creepy. Sort of creative, but creepy.

Turtwig: NO, I WANTED TREETLE!!!! ...seriously, I like it though.

Chimchar: what the duck. It sounds a bit strange. Don't really like it.

Kricketot: sweet when pronounced. <3

The rest I either think are fine or are hurting my eyes. ...meh, I'll get used to them. Eventually. Someday.

Off-topic: ZOMG HEY GARDY~! You should post here more often. :d

Anyways, onto the names. Before I start, I'd just like to say this: I LOVE THEM ALL!

*copies comments from other forums*

Turtwig = It's decent, there's better names (that I can't think of), and there's worse names. Oh well, can't win 'em all, and the later names make up for it.

Chimcher = Read above, only this one is worse than the one above. ANd I haven't heard a SINGLE good name for this pokemon, so it's good that this one doesn't phail completely.

Pochama = Good, I actually liked this name and thought it fit, I'm glad they romanized it. Have YOU hear any good names for it? Because, IMO, Ringuain and the like phail, and they're annoying to here.

Starly = ROCK. It's actually quite a good name, Starly > Mukkuru, and very fitting. Makes me wonder what Mukubird and Mukuhawk will be.

Kricketot = ZOMG I LOVE THIS NAME! It fits perfectly, it's beautiful, there absolutely nothing wrong with it, and EVERYTHING RIGHT ABOUT IT! Plus it's creative.

Spinx = Please read above. The only thing about this name that makes me sad is that it is not 100% confirmed. I LOVE IT!

Shieldon = It makes me laugh a little bit, but also makes me smile. It's not the MOST fitting name, but it still fits, and still rocks.

Floatzel = Meh, just like Buizel. Except this one doesn't have nearly as many pronunciation variations.

Snelios/Shelios = Shelios, ftw. But Snelios is nice, too.

Buneary = This is where it starts to get weird. Buneary certainly wasn't an expected name, nor do I understand it, but meh. As I said before, can't win 'em all.

Glameow = Read above. But did they have to put 'meow' in there? :/

Happini = Lol, it rocks. Reminds me of Houdini. I DON'T CARE THAT IT DOESN'T END IN 'SEY'. IT'S FINE THE WAY IT IS.

Croalurk = Zomg awesome. XD It gives it the air of mystery that it doesn't have at all. I'll have fun with this in my story. XP

Carnivine = 3rd best name in the bunch, behind Spinx and Kricketot. I love it!

Zomg happybounceysqueeYay!

Personally, my favorite name out of this bunch is actually Carnivine, after that probably Shieldon. Then Starly and Kricketot, I guess.

My turn! Copying the format from Mr. Pelliper...

Turtwig = I like the fan-name Terrapine so I hope this is used for one of the evolutions. Turtwig is a simple portmandeu (sp?) name. Not worse than Treecko. I don't mind most bad starter names because it's the evolutions we care about.

Chimcher = Terrible. We already have a "char" starter. I think this is the worse of any English name for this gen. Ugh. Atleast you only have to be stuck with it for a few levels til it evolves. Ugh. Uuuugh.

Pochama = sounds a bit Japanesey compared to the others since it does keep its name. May make little kids who don't visit forums wonder where its name came from. But it's a cute name. I find making a portmandeu of "penguin" to be difficult.

Starly = My first impression was that it sounds like a trendy name for a hillbilly girl. Then I realized this name is on the same level as Pidgey. "Cutified" version of the bird it's based off of. So now I like it more.

Kricketot = Simple, a bit odd looking but it works.

Spinx = Not very original. Also a bit strong sounding for a lion cub. Ah well. It sounds like sparks too.

Shieldon = Sounds like the name for its evolution, "don" being associated with big dinosaurs and tusks and horns and stuff.

Floatzel = expected.

Snelios/Shelios = I rather like this name, Snelios moreso. It almost sounds high class. I hope the evolution gets the "elios" suffix too.

Buneary = A bit awkward sounding but it makes sense. Bunny and ear. Heh.

Glameow = Yet another simple portmandeu. We already have a meow-named cat. Whatever.

Happini = I hate this Pokemon anyway so I won't judge the name besides it reminds me of Dratini.

Croalurk = Didn't get the impression of this being a lurking Pokemon *shrug*

Carnivine = My favorite name of the bunch. Even though we had Carvanha, I find Carnivine to be different enough sounding. I love this name.
Zironixx
Sparlynx > Spinx
Fluffy Cat of doom> Glameow

The other names are okay-ish.

*posts again and joins into opinions* =D

Turtwig: Hrm. I'm going to choose this lil' guy, but the name doesn't seem to agree with me =/

Chimchar: Well, everyone yelled about it being similar to Charmander, but since I hate this thing I guess I can live with it XD

Pochama: Awr, they're keeping the name! <33 Yay!

Starly: I like it. Although it makes me wonder if there is any star marking on it...XD (I'm stupid and proud)

Kricketot: I can see this on a breakfast menu. "Kricketot - Served with tater-tots and insects."

Spinx: ...hum, fits a Ground type more than an Electric. *crosses fingers for better name*

Shieldon: Would fit the Rhydon-evo much more =/ Although it's nice =]

Floatzel: Ooolalah. I love it.

Sneilios/Sheilios: I hope for the "sn" prefix more than "sh" =] It's quite snail-ish.

Buneary: Aww. I like it.

Glameow: People say "Meowth is already there!" I don't care. Sounds like "glamour", which quie fits it =]

Happini: "She's the great..HAAAAPINI!" XD

Croalurk: Change the "a" to a "w" and you've got a name for Donkarasu! =]

Carnivine: ...Masukippa is a carnivore? =S

Beappa: If you say "Beepah", it's fine. "Baepah" is weird. After all, it is a beaver!
PichuPi
Note: Snelios/Shelios has been unofficially comfirmed to be Snellos by Serebii.net.
PichuPi
Er, sorry, it's Shellos. >_>

And they said Pochama is Piplup? Wah... anyway, Beappa sounds weird. Sounds like "Beeper." XD
Happypants3
Kk, Pokemon.com's confirmed an amount of these names on the DP page, but you might need to refresh a bit to see them ~.
Oh yea, Turtwig/Chimchar/Piplup. Anyone noticed that for each name, the syllables start with the same letter? Splenderifilous! *Brick'd*
Still luving Buizul and Mantyke's names. Bouysel seems less... Foreign, but after all, it is an otter. And if there isn't a better name, you don't want the weasel in your otter to be obvious. ^^;
Red scyther
"Turtwig"? "TURTWIG"? The thing is an anklosaur!
SS
New names!

Roserade, Shinx, Bidoof, etc.

I need a starter Pokemon that isn't a starter. (o_O)
