Two versions of the story are ongoing right now (see the revision history for details). There is the ILCOE, the final incarnation of the 3.x series, which has been in writing since 2004, and the IALCOTN of the 4.x series, which was started in 2005. The ILCOE, being older, is not as well written and the plot is far shakier, particularly in the early chapters. It is, however, also a lot farther into the story so far, and because it's the farthest I've ever gotten with this fic, I'm a lot more interested in writing it and thus it is updated faster (not that that tends to be particularly fast). The IALCOTN is better written and thought out, but it will be years before it gets to the point in the storyline at which the ILCOE is now.

Which one to read? Your choice. Do you want quality or quantity, so to speak? You can read both if you want. However, you can not read the IALCOTN, skip the corresponding chapters of the ILCOE and then go on to read the remainder of it. Versions 3.x and 4.x are not internally consistent with one another; events have been changed and moved and various chapter splits reconsidered. You will be thoroughly confused if you splice the two versions together. Go with one or the other and then read the other one if you want.
